Usually when it comes to Asian raps its mainly about a regular kid who just pursued his interest in music, but Queens rapper, Shogunna comes with a different story.

Born and raised in Flushing, Queens this MC has experienced life in the darker side of Asian American life. Living in a struggling household, the young Shogun turned to the streets to find some enlightenment, bringing him throughout the Asian undergrounds of neighborhoods like Chinatown and Flushing. He served 5 years at Rikers Island and during then started to put his thoughts down on paper in lyrical form, eventually turning a talent and hobby into a full time passion. Take a gander at what he’s saying, he’ll paint the pictures pretty clearly.

He’s released several mixtapes and an album, Signed to the Streets, but has been inactive now for several years. BUT!!! He had just announced several days ago that he’s back in the lab!

This is the first track I’ve heard of his and is still one of my favorites of his to date. Forbidden City was released in 2006 and is from Shogunna’s Last Man Standing Volume II mixtape.

“New Love” -Taiyo Na and Magnetic North

- TAIYO -
it’s tough out there whether you single or not
feel right but then rub your temple and stop
enter a shock or pretend that you’re not
you roam all alone taken every option
how come it’s so hard to find love
how many do before their time’s up
some grow cold and fold their life up
i do it all the time when i think that life sucks
it’s shaky ground i don’t really know you
let’s keep it real about the things we go through
like how you got baggage from your old dude
and i know i got flaws that ain’t so cool
take a leap of faith in the riddle of my eyes
i’m a moon all alone in the middle of the sky
we 2 broken hearts who can mend together
and if we give it all we could mend forever

- CHORUS -
it’s a new love
what can we do love
we’re going through what
opens you up
cuz it’s a new love
a total new love
when it’s through love
i hope it’s you love

- DEREK -
something bout you changes my attitude
you take old nostalgia and make it brand new
cuz you teleport me to my boyz ii men days
so much i’m tempted to record and make you a corny mix tape
it feels like we’re in high school and you are my boo
and the only way i know how to rock is beside you
like ross and rachel tom collins and angel
we’re a fuzzy sitcom love crossed with a broadway musical
cuz you’re the closest i’ve ever had to feeling so surreal
i think it’s raining candy canes quote soul 4 real
and you’re so down to earth always down to nerd out
we’re a nerd match in heaven girl this could work out
it’s been so many years since i’ve felt this up high
felt this much trust and felt this much inspired
you’ve given a hopeless romantic hope yet
cuz you’re my homegirl the girl i want to go home with

[CHORUS]

- THERESA -
against the odds but i’m no mathematician
not in the cards but i’m no black magician
against our god but i don’t know religion
not in the stars but forget the solar system
we’re so resistant but what’s there to lose love
i know it’s new love but you give me goose bumps
forgive my loose tongue i speak too easily
but it seems to me this is what it seems to be
and we’re vietnamese of course i feel ya
love how your name is so phonetically familiar
from the same homeland we got the same symmetry
from the same language where love means injury
and that’s the minute we knew it was dangerous
militant cupid got a cruise missile aimed at us
we could be like whitney houston’s the greatest love
or at least see how beautiful the train wreck was

(Seriously, she is flawless).

In the matter of two days, Manny Pacquiao has managed to alienate himself from significant parts of his fan base by stating some rather eyebrow-raising opinions about queer men and same-sex marriage. Firstly, he criticized President Obama’s beliefs about same-sex marriage. Next, it’s now been reported by the LA Weekly that he believes queer men should be put to death.

The responses I’ve seen have gone along the lines of “Pacquiao should just stick to boxing and keep his nose out of other people’s business–particularly if his own marriage could use some work.” Honestly though, it feels a little too easy to put Pacquiao on the whipping stand. It feels like this is a golden opportunity for Filipino and Filipino American LGBTs to expose the homophobia, transphobia and sexism that is in our cultures and educate our communities.

For many Filipinos and Filipino Americans, it’s easy to box us LGBTs into neat little boxes that go along the stereotypes: the effeminate male hairdressers, the butch women who insist on being called “pare” (or brother), etc. I struggled with my sexual identity within this cultural context. I wasn’t fem enough for my family to be comfortable with my sexual identity; I had no desires to be a hairdresser either. At the same time, I bristled against the homophobic, transphobic and heterosexist ramblings done by my male relatives whenever queer men were seen on popular Filipino TV shows and movies. Queer men and women in Filipino TV shows and movies are often seen as predatory, incapable of maintaining healthy relationships with their partners, and are just used for comic relief. Very few representations exist where we are seen through a more human lens.

When I was coming out 20 years ago, I thought that there really was no one like me, Filipino American, queer and comfortable with my masculinity. I often thought of suicide growing up because I didn’t want to burden my family with the stigma of me being gay; never mind that I’m one of the more successful people in my generation now.

Partly because of that reason, this feels like it’s an opportunity for my fellow Filipino and Filipino American LGBTs to not only put Pacquiao to task–but our cultures as well. We have to stop turning the other way when we see homophobic, transphobic and heterosexist representations of ourselves in the media. We need to start showing our side of the story; how we’ve struggled to fight through these stereotypes and be who we are, and proud of who we are.

Yes, what Pacquiao said is extremely fucked up. But his opinions are the product of a culture that promotes this homophobia and transphobia. We need to educate ourselves and those in our community that this is something that will no longer be tolerated.

Happy Mother’s Day!

I’d like to share a recipe my own mother passed onto me that I made tonight. This was a meal I ate all the time growing up, and when I was old enough, immediately asked to learn how to cook. From mapo tofu to tomatoes and eggs, from stir-fried bok choi to tang yuan, from steaming a giant fish to mixing all the leftovers with some water and rice to make pao-fan…I am my mother’s daughter. Food has always been a crucial part of who I am and if I go too long without eating some home cooking, I start feeling that loss in the very core of my identity.

This is how traditions, cultures, stories, and rituals get passed down in my family: in the kitchen. My dad would be singing while cooking up some vegetables while my mom was carefully controlling the oil splash from the pork chops as my brother and I sat at the table arguing and chatting.

Happy Mother’s Day, mom. I love you, this one’s for you!

Rena’s Pork Chops:

  • Four center cut pork chops (I got mine from the local Asian supermarket for $4 for 6!)
  • Soy sauce
  • Ginger
  • Green onion
  • Garlic
  • Vegetable stir-fry sauce
  • White pepper
  • Sugar
  • Black pepper
  • Salt

First, marinade the chops in a generous amount of soy sauce, vegetable stir-fry sauce, chopped garlic, chopped ginger, chopped green onion, black pepper, and white pepper. Let it sit for a couple hours and really soak in the flavor. Heat up a pan with some corn oil, ginger, garlic, and green pepper. After they’re browned and the smell has completely filled up your kitchen, splash a little soy sauce and put the first chop in. I poured a bit of the marinade in too since it was too dry. If it’s too salty, sprinkle some sugar on top and mix it into the sauce. Flip the chop after about 8 minutes and cook the other side thoroughly. Add in seasonings to taste and serve with steamed rice!
